Project Overview

As a UI/UX Designer for AMOpportunities, I have the privilege of contributing to a transformative service industry that bridges the gap between medical institutions, universities, and medical trainees worldwide. AMOpportunities operates at the intersection of B2B and B2C, providing guided support and facilitating connections through clinical rotations across the globe. In my role, I leverage my passion for design and technology to craft intuitive experiences for both internal stakeholders and external users, ensuring seamless interactions and meaningful engagements across web applications. Through a commitment to user-centric design principles and knowledge of the healthcare landscape, I collaborate with cross-functional teams to enhance the accessibility and efficiency of AMOpportunities' platform, empowering medical professionals and institutions to thrive in a dynamic and interconnected world.

The primary challenge for AMOpportunities lies in navigating the complexities of the medical education and training landscape. This includes addressing the logistical hurdles of coordinating clinical rotations across diverse geographical locations, as well as meeting the diverse needs and expectations of both medical institutions and trainees.

The user flow of AMOpportunities' external web application is designed to provide a seamless and intuitive experience for medical trainees seeking clinical rotations worldwide. From exploration to application, the user flow guides users through key stages of discovering, selecting, and applying for clinical opportunities.

  1. Registration and Profile Creation:

  • Users begin their journey by registering for an account on the AMOpportunities platform and creating a personalized profile.

  • During profile creation, users provide essential information about their medical background, qualifications, interests, and preferences, which helps tailor the rotation recommendations and application process.

  1. Exploring Rotations Marketplace:

  • Upon completing their profile, users gain access to the Rotations Marketplace, a comprehensive database of clinical rotations across various specialties and locations.

  • They can browse through available rotations, filter results based on criteria such as specialty, location, duration, and availability, and explore detailed descriptions and requirements for each rotation.

  1. Selecting and Applying for Rotations:

  • After finding suitable rotations, users can initiate the application process directly through the platform.

  • The application process typically involves submitting required documents, such as CVs, transcripts, and personal statements, and completing any additional requirements specified by the institution offering the rotation.

  • Users can track the status of their applications, receive notifications about updates and responses from institutions, and communicate with institutions as needed throughout the process.

  1. Confirmation and Preparation:

  • Upon acceptance into a rotation, users receive confirmation and details about the rotation schedule, location, and requirements.

  • They may also gain access to educational resources and support materials to prepare for the rotation, ensuring a smooth and enriching experience.

Design Process

At the heart of my design process lies a commitment to user-centricity, collaboration, and continuous improvement. By leveraging a combination of industry-standard tools and methodologies, I ensure that every design decision is informed by user insights and aligned with project goals.

User Research: User research serves as the foundation of my design process, providing valuable insights into the needs, behaviors, and preferences of our target audience. To document and organize our research efforts, I utilize Confluence, a collaborative documentation tool. Here, I create detailed research plans outlining objectives, methodologies, and timelines, ensuring clarity and alignment across the team. Additionally, Confluence serves as a centralized repository for research findings, allowing stakeholders to access and reference key insights throughout the project lifecycle.

Affinity Mapping with FigJam: Affinity mapping is a critical step in synthesizing research data and identifying patterns, themes, and opportunities for design intervention. To facilitate this process, I turn to FigJam, a collaborative whiteboarding tool within the Figma ecosystem. By visualizing research data through affinity mapping, we gain clarity and consensus on user needs and pain points, informing the design direction and prioritization of features.

Conceptualization and Iteration:
Armed with insights from user research, I embark on the conceptualization phase, exploring a range of design concepts and solutions. Through rapid prototyping and iteration in Axure, I translate ideas into tangible experiences, soliciting feedback from stakeholders and usability testing to validate design decisions. This iterative approach allows us to refine the user experience, addressing pain points and optimizing usability along the way.

Collaborative Design Reviews:
Regular design reviews and critiques foster alignment, creativity, and accountability. I meet daily with the lead product designer and developers. An iterative feedback loop ensures that design decisions are thoroughly evaluated and refined, leading to stronger outcomes.

Documentation and Knowledge Sharing: As a believer in the value of transparency and documentation, I was the first employee to establish a formal UX research process at AMO. I maintain detailed design and research documentation throughout the project lifecycle. From design specifications and component libraries to user personas and journey maps, I utilize Confluence to centralize and share knowledge with stakeholders, ensuring clarity and alignment across the team.

AMOpportunities has a comprehensive library of reusable components, patterns, and guidelines that ensure consistency, efficiency, and scalability across our digital ecosystem. As one of only two UX designers on the AMOpportunities team, I play a pivotal role in maintaining and evolving this design system.

Reflecting on the AMOpportunities project journey, I'm immensely proud of the strides we've made in enhancing the design system, refining UX research processes, and ultimately elevating the user experience of both our internal and external web applications. As a key driver of design innovation within the team, I've had the privilege of spearheading initiatives that have transformed how we approach design and user engagement.

  • Elevating Overall User Experience: Through iterative design, ux research methods, and cross-functional collaboration, I've played a pivotal role in refining our internal and external web applications to be more intuitive, efficient, and impactful. I've ensured that our products evolve in tandem with the ever-changing needs of our users.
